TDEE Definition

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure—the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period, including everything from breathing and digestion to walking, exercising, and fidgeting.

It's made up of four components: your basal metabolic rate (BMR), the energy you burn through planned physical activity, the thermic effect of food (the calories used to digest what you eat), and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), which covers all the movement you do outside of formal workouts. Understanding your TDEE is the foundation for setting calorie and macro targets, whether you're trying to lose fat, build muscle, or maintain your current weight.

The Four Components of TDEE

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the largest piece of the puzzle for most people. It's the energy your body uses at complete rest to keep your heart beating, lungs breathing, cells dividing, and brain functioning. BMR typically accounts for 60–75% of your total daily burn, depending on how active you are.

Activity energy expenditure covers the calories you burn during planned exercise—running, lifting, cycling, sports, or any intentional workout. This component varies widely: someone who trains hard six days a week will burn significantly more here than someone who walks a few times a week.

Thermic effect of food (TEF) is the energy cost of digesting, absorbing, and processing the nutrients you eat. Protein has the highest thermic effect (around 20–30% of the calories in protein go toward digestion), followed by carbohydrates (5–10%) and fats (0–3%). TEF usually makes up about 10% of total expenditure.

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) includes all the movement you do outside of formal exercise: walking to your car, doing laundry, typing, standing, even fidgeting. NEAT can vary by hundreds of calories per day between individuals with similar body sizes, and it's one reason two people with identical stats on paper can have very different TDEEs in practice.

How TDEE Calculators Work

Most online TDEE calculators use equations like the Harris–Benedict or Mifflin–St Jeor formulas to estimate your BMR based on age, sex, weight, and height. They then multiply that BMR by an activity factor—typically ranging from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active)—to estimate your total daily burn.

These formulas are population averages. They work reasonably well for many people, but they can't account for individual differences in muscle mass, metabolic efficiency, genetics, or NEAT. Two people with the same stats might have TDEEs that differ by 200–300 calories or more.

That's why every TDEE calculator gives you an estimate, not a measurement. The number is a starting point. You use it to set your initial calorie and macro targets, then adjust based on what actually happens to your weight, energy, and performance over a few weeks. Using TDEE to Set Your Macros

Your TDEE represents your maintenance calories—the intake at which your weight stays stable over time. Once you know (or estimate) that number, you can adjust it to match your goal.
