Glycemic Load Definition
Glycemic load (GL) is glycemic index adjusted for the actual amount of carbohydrate in a serving. It's calculated by multiplying a food's glycemic index by the grams of carbohydrate in a portion, then dividing by 100.
The formula looks like this:
Glycemic Load = (Glycemic Index × grams of carbohydrate) ÷ 100
Glycemic load exists because glycemic index alone doesn't tell you how much carbohydrate you're actually eating. A food can have a high GI but deliver very few grams of carbohydrate per serving, making its real-world impact on blood sugar much smaller than the GI number suggests.
How Glycemic Load Differs from Glycemic Index
