Why Women Often Need Fewer Total Macros
A 130-pound woman will have lower total calorie needs than a 180-pound man, all else equal, because total energy expenditure scales with bodyweight. Lower bodyweight means a lower basal metabolic rate and fewer calories burned during activity. This is math, not biology unique to women.
Lower average lean mass also means lower absolute protein targets. A woman with 100 pounds of lean mass does not need as many grams of protein as someone with 140 pounds of lean mass, even if the per-pound target is the same. The ratio stays constant; the total grams change.
Activity level and goals still matter more than gender alone. A highly active woman training for strength will need more total macros than a sedentary man of the same weight. The calculator does not care about gender—it cares about the variables you put in.
Setting Protein Targets
Protein targets are set per kilogram or pound of bodyweight, typically in the range of 0.7 to 1.0 grams per pound (1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram) for most goals. Setting Fat Targets
Fat intake should stay within a range that supports hormone production, nutrient absorption, and satiety. A common minimum is around 0.3 to 0.4 grams per pound of bodyweight, or roughly 20 to 35 percent of total calories. Going too low—especially below 15 percent of calories—can interfere with hormone health over time.
For a 140-pound woman eating 1,800 calories, 20 to 35 percent fat translates to 40 to 70 grams per day. For a 160-pound woman eating 2,200 calories, it is 49 to 86 grams. Individual tolerance varies: some people feel better with higher fat and lower carbs, others the reverse. Both are fine as long as you stay within a healthy range and meet your other targets.

- Protein: 1.0 g/lb = 140 g (560 calories)
- Fat: 0.35 g/lb = 49 g (441 calories)
- Carbs: Remaining calories = 1,600 − 1,001 = 599 ÷ 4 = 150 g
Final macros: 140 g protein / 150 g carbs / 49 g fat
Muscle Building Example: 160 lb Woman
- Goal: Muscle gain
- Bodyweight: 160 lb
- Estimated maintenance calories: 2,200
- Target calorie surplus: 200–300 calories → 2,400–2,500 daily calories
